As a pro-democracy leader, She remained under house arrest in Burma for almost 15 years from 20 July 1989 following her fight for democracy until her most recent release on 13 November 2010. Like the South African leader Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi has become an international symbol of peaceful resistance in the face of oppression.
