CRI听力:Typhoon Sepat Lands in East China

2007-08-20来源:和谐英语

Typhoon Sepat packing winds of nearly 120 km per hour landed in southeast China's Fujian Province at 2:00 a.m. Sunday.

Before the landfall in Fujian, Sepat landed in Hualien, the central-eastern part of Taiwan on Saturday, injuring dozens of people.

Our reporter Dan Dan has more.

Reporter:
By Saturday, China have evacuated more than 900-thousand people from homes along the southeast coast.

Airline flights and ferry services were cancelled along a stretch of coastline from east China's Zhejiang province through Fujian to Guangdong in the south.

Highest-level storm alert has been issued by provincial weather bureau before the storm landed in Fujian early on Sunday.

Heavy rainfall was forecast as far north as Shanghai.

Nearly 540-thousand people have been evacuated in Fujian, 300-thousand in Zhejiang and 70,000 in Guangdong.

Major cities in Fujian province have cancelled a total of 109 domestic and international airline flights, and expressways in Fuzhou were also closed.

Reservoirs discharged millions of cubic meters of water to make room for more rainwater.

Before landing in Fujian, typhoon Sepat slammed into Taiwan on Saturday, washing out roads, uprooting trees and injuring dozens.

Authorities ordered the evacuation of thousands of people around the island, as electricity supplies faltered and rains battered already saturated river valleys, mountainsides and urban centers.

Typhoon Sepat caused landslides near the eastern city of Hualien. The storm cut an east-west swathe, leaving overturned cars, disrupted electricity grids and deserted streets in its wake.
