High-power water pumps have been operating around the clock to drain a mine shaft where 172 coal workers remained trapped in a mine in Shandong Province.
Senior official with the rescue headquarters, Jiang Daming said the installed pumps are working at full speed.
"We have been fully prepared for the draining work as several high-power pumps are working together right now."
More than 2,000 soldiers, police and miners managed to plug a breach in the levee of the swollen Wen River on Saturday after it swamped the Huayuan Mining Company shaft in Xintai City on Friday.
584 miners were reported to have escaped from the shaft after the flooding began.
Extra pumps from the provinces of Henan, Hebei and Shanxi were brought in to speed the rescue operation and all coal mines near the banks of the Wen River have been ordered to stop production and evacuate.
