CRI听力:UN Climate Change Panel to Release Final Report of the Year

2007-11-13来源:和谐英语

The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change or IPCC has begun meeting in Spain to discuss a fourth and final report this year on the problem. The document is to be released later on Saturday.

Environmentalists and report authors expect tense discussions in Valencia on what should be included and what is being left out of the document, which is a synthesis of thousands of scientific papers.

Janos Pasztor is with the UN Environmental Programme, a parent body of the IPCC:

"...what is produced here in Valencia is the guide that everyone of the thousands of delegates attending the United Nations climate change conference in Bali will be packing in their suitcases and slipping in their back pockets."

Meanwhile, Yvo de Boer, the United Nations top climate change official, warned that world policymakers should map out a path to curb climate change.

"Failing to recognize the urgency of this message and act on it will be nothing less than criminally irresponsible. Failing to act would constitute a direct attack on the poorest of the poor."

The IPCC jointly won this year's Nobel Peace prize along with former United State vice president, Al Gore, for raising awareness about global warming.

The panel has already established that humans are causing climate change. On Saturday the panel will release a document summing up scientific consensus on the state of global warming and what can be done to prevent overheating.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will attend the launch of the report, which will provide a basis for a crucial meeting about global warming next month in Bali, Indonesia.
