Chinese officials have again pledged they are taking serious measures to guarantee the safety of food during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Li Yuanping is an official with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, a product safety watchdog.
"We want to reassure all the athletes, referees and visitors that the Chinese government is confident and capable of guaranteeing the safety of food and the other products, and they can all come to China with their minds at ease."
On Monday, a media group of more than 150 Chinese and foreign reporters, visited pork and chicken producers in Beijing as well as national and Beijing municipal quarantine bureaus.
The trip was hosted by BOCOG, the Organizing Committee for the 2008 Games.
Journalists observed meat processing procedures and talked with Chinese scientists about how they test for chemicals, metals and microbes in food.
Meanwhile, Chinese officials also stressed that there would be no special safety standard for Olympic food.
Li Yuanping from the product safety watchdog again:
"We have taken strict measures to secure food safety for all, not only Olympic athletes. High quality and safe food are widely available in Beijing markets."
Beijing Olympics organizers say the media pool was organized because food safety is a hot topic that journalists from China and abroad wanted more information on. |
