CRI听力:Haniyeh Welcomes Ceasefire Efforts; Israel Will Agree under Certain Conditions

2008-05-02来源:和谐英语

Gaza's Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh says that an Egyptian-backed cease-fire plan accepted by Palestinian militant groups can bring calm and stability to the region.

"Today there is an agreement under the Egyptian supervision. The ball is in the Israeli court right now. We hope that there is going to be a chance that might bring calm and stability to the region."

But Israeli government spokesman, Mark Regev, suggests the responsibility is on Hamas to create the conditions for peace. (wWw.hxen.net)

"Peace can only be achieved if there is a total cessation of hostile fire from Gaza into Israel; a cessation of terrorist attacks against us and of course and end to arm smuggling. If that were to happen, we could have peace tomorrow."

Wednesday's meeting in Cairo aimed at bringing smaller Palestinian factions into any potential deal.

Hamas said last week that it would be prepared to accept a six-month cease-fire with Israel only in Gaza, and dropped an earlier demand that any truce immediately include the West Bank as well.
