CRI听力:China Launches Anti-terror Drills for the Beijing Olympics

With less than 60 days to go before the Beijing Olympics, Chinese authorities are pulling out all stops to give the world a harmonious and unforgettable games. Currently, organizers are conducting anti-terrorism drills to ensure a smooth and safe event.

China has begun executing a series of anti-terrorism drills to counter potential threats to the upcoming Beijing Olympics.

What you are hearing is people being evacuated from a sports avenue, where a staged chemical explosion just occurred.
An official from the anti-terrorism command center says the week-long drills, dubbed "Great Wall No.5", will train security personnel to deal with chemical attacks, hijacks and other possible threats.

"The ongoing anti-terrorism exercise is the largest security drill we've had in the lead-up to the Olympics."

Security personnel taking part in the drills are trained to respond to real-life situations.

In today's exercise, students and teachers were evacuated from a school after a staged chemical explosion. During the rescue process, security officers even took note of the wind's direction to help protect the survivors from gas poisoning.

Helicopters were also used in the drill. The official gives us the details.

"We have four helicopters that are provided by Beijing's public security department. These helicopters will help us keep an eye on and deter potential threats. They will also provide aerial support to rescue efforts."

According to the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, the week-long drills will involve police forces, the People's Armed Police, the People's Liberation Army and staff from the health, environmental protection, meteorology and transportation departments.
