Sudanese investigators are trying to determine what caused a jetliner that had just landed in a thunderstorm to veer off a runway and burst into flames in Sudan's capital Khartoum.
By Wednesday morning, the fire had been completely extinguished and civil defence officials were examining the wreckage to determine the causes of the crash.
Abdel Hafez Abdel Rahim MahmoudAt is the spokesman of the Sudan Civil Aviation Authority.
"The number of survivors is raised to one-seven-one, that is 171 persons plus 29 persons were dead. Meanwhile there was about 14 considered as lost so the total is 214 peoples onboard the plane."
Sudanese officials said the plane skidded off the runaway and rammed into the light poles used by pilots to navigate when landing in bad weather, sparking a fire on the right side of the aircraft. (www.hxen.net)
Airbus said in a statement that it was sending a team of specialists to Khartoum to help in the investigation.
