China's central government says it has appropriated 27 million yuan, or around 4 million US dollars, of emergency funds for relief efforts for the 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck southwestern China's Sichuan and Yunnan provinces last week.
As of Monday afternoon, the disaster has claimed 40 lives and injured some 600 people.
The disaster relief work began immediately after the quake. Tents have now been erected, and communication has been restored. Injured victims are being treated in nearby facilities.(Www.hxen.net)
In Dalongtan Village in Panzhihua, near the epicenter, nearly 400 homes have been destroyed.
Zhang Xingming is head of the village.
"By Sunday evening, we had set up 41 tents to house all of the elderly and disabled residents in our village."
Some 5,000 soldiers from Chengdu Military Area Command are still working to save lives in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. They have already pulled more than 200 people from the debris and have set up more than 2,000 tents in the quake region.
