CRI听力: China FM Press Conference on US arms sale to Taiwan, NKorea, Guantanamo Bay

2008-10-08来源:和谐英语

The Chinese foreign ministry says a planned multi-billion dollar US arms sale to Taiwan threatens China's national security and has cast a pall over military relations between Beijing and Washington.

Speaking at a regular news briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said the sale undermines years of efforts to improve military ties between China and the United States.

"We require the US side to use their actions to uphold the One-China policy and their commitments in the three communiques between China and US, and immediately cancel the relevant arms sales to Taiwan, stop the military relation with Taiwan so as to avoid damaging the peace and stability of Taiwan Strait and the overall situation of China and US relation and the relations between military forces."(Www.hXen.com)

Also at the briefing, Qin Gang demanded the repatriation of Chinese nationals held by the United States military at the Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

"They are members of terror organisations which have been listed on the terrorism list of the United Nations Security Council. China has urged the US to repatriate these Chinese terrorist suspects to China on many occasions. We hope the US will take our position seriously and repatriate these persons to China sooner rather than later."

The United States is holding 17 ethnic Uighurs from western China at the naval prison.

Qin Gang told reporters that the Chinese are suspected of being members of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, which the United States lists as a "terror organization".
