CRI听力:Order A Halt to Tobacco Commercials
At the 13th Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, deputies complained that tobacco companies have escaped regulations and laws by making their advertisements look like they are for public good.
An article on the Xinhua news agency Website said while stricter control of tobacco commercials may reduce the earnings of local treasuries, it would benefit the majority of people in the long run.
The article said tobacco commercials and sponsorships are yet to be banned completely in China, although the country has joined the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
The restrictions on tobacco advertisements has instead triggered innovative moves by tobacco companies seeking to disguise their commercials as public service advertisements. (www.hXen.com)
However, the article goes on to say, regulators seem to turn a blind eye toward these commercials, which illustrates the loopholes in China's oversight of tobacco advertisements.
In conclusion, the article suggests instituting local protection policies and abandoning the chain of interest between tobacco companies and governments. In this way, the loopholes can be plugged so as to put an end to the misleading commercials.
