CRI听力:Water Crisis Reveals Widespread Inefficiencies
The water supply to 200 thousand residents in Yancheng, in east China's Jiangsu province was resumed 70 hours after a disruption due to the water source being contaminated by a chemical company. The heads of the chemical company involved in the incident have been taken into custody.
The 'China Youth Daily' published a commentary, saying that punishing chemical company executives is far from good enough when addressing such a widespread and worsening contamination crisis. The problems associated with the tainted water are a result of long-term inefficient management, rather than merely the outcome of a single chemical contamination. (www.hXen.com)
The article points out that the root cause of the pollution was that the local government made efforts to develop the economy at the cost of the environment. A great number of chemical companies introduced by the local government have taken root in the upper reaches of the river, thus posing an increased threat to the environment.
The commentary suggests that the local government should abandon its economic development mode of purely pursuing the GDP. What's more, the interests of ordinary people should be placed on top on the government's agenda.
