A 72-nation conference on Afghanistan will launch a broader international commitment to the security of the region, including neighbouring Pakistan.
The conference, which will be held in the Netherlands, will bring together all the countries bordering Afghanistan, including Iran, and all nations contributing troops to the NATO-led international force fighting Taliban insurgents.
The Afghan President Hamid Karzai expressed optimism about the meeting.(www.hXen.com)
"And that together, Afghanistan and the international community will strive and succeed towards the completion of this journey together."
Special US envoy Richard Holbrooke also said the meeting was important, and its success already was guaranteed by the lengthy list of attendees.
"There will be a lot of important side talks, and beyond that the very fact that they're here is a signal that the world has not forgotten Afghanistan, and that now, we acknowledge that Pakistan is part of the issue."
At present, more than half of the 70,000 troops now in Afghanistan are Americans.
