CRI听力:Brazil Declares 3-day Mourning after Bridge Collapse in World Cup City
Brazil's World Cup host city Belo Horizonte declared a 3-day mourning for the victims of an overpass collapse that killed two people and injured 22 others.
All World Cup celebrations are suspended during the mourning period.
The two dead are a bus driver and a female bus passenger, whose child survived with injuries.
The bridge was located some three kilometers from the Mineirao Stadium where World Cup games are being played.
It collapsed as vehicles were passing on a busy road underneath. Part of a passenger bus came under heavy crush impact as other vehicles including two cargo trucks and a compact car became crushed.
An eyewitness named Aneta recalled the moment of the incident.
"People were in a frenzy when they got off the bus, and half of the bus was buried under the overpass. People, shouting and crying, rushed out onto street - not knowing what to do. I was also so scared, I kept crying. I could do nothing but wait, for the rescue workers."
It's reported that the bridge construction is part of an urban transportation improvement project undertaken for the World Cup and at the time of the incident, it had yet to be completed.
The Mineirao stadium is due to host the World Cup semi-final match between Brazil and Germany on July 8.
