CRI听力:Chief Executive Supports NPC Decision on HK Election

2014-09-01来源:CRI

Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung is describing the NPC's decision a historic moment for Hong Kong.

"If we are willing, the majority of Hong Kong people, that is, some five million eligible voters, will no longer be bystanders in the next CE election. We will all be able to vote for the CE in 2017 through "one person, one vote" at the polling stations."

But at the same time, CY Leung admits the Hong Kong government has much more work to do before the new plans can come to fruition.

"To put the Decision into implementation, we need to obtain a two-thirds majority support from all Members of the LegCo. Failing that, we would have no choice but to revert to the status quo for the 1200-member Election Committee to select the CE; and our five million Hong Kong people would be deprived of the voting right that they would otherwise be entitled."

CY Leung also stresses the framework is not the final decision, since a number of issues, including the number of candidates, has yet to be finalized.

The head of Hong Kong's Legislative Council, Jasper Tsang Yok-sing, says he hopes people in Hong Kong accept the new proposals.

"After the decision, I think every one should consider how we could find out the best path for Hong Kong's political development, which is in the interest of Hong Kong and the country."

Deputy Secretary General of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Li Fei, together with other officials from the central authority in Beijing, are now in Hong Kong to meet with city officials later on this Monday.

For CRI, this is Li Jing in Hong Kong.
