In European Champions League,
Bayern Munich scored a last minute goal to beat Manchester City 1-0.
City now faces a difficult task to qualify for the knockout stages as their fellow Group E rivals Roma kicked off their campaign with an impressive 5-1 win over CSKA Moscow.
Elsewhere, Cesc Fabregas scored his first Chelsea goal but was unable to lead his team to victory in their opening leg against FC Schalke.
Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar drove in the equalizer and the game ended in a 1-all draw.
The result will be a disappointing one for Chelsea coach Mourinho, but he may not need to worry too much.
In the Champions League last season, Chelsea lost its opening group game to Basel but went on to reach the semi-final.
Chelsea made a storming start this season, winning its first four Premier League games.
Elsewhere,
Barcelona, at home, edged Apoel Nicosia 1-0.
And lastly, Ajax was held to a 1-1 draw with Paris Saint Germain.
