Joost Luiten of the Netherlands opened a six-under 65 to lead the first round of the Wales Open.
He scored seven birdies, but dropped one shot at the 17th hole.
"Yeah, no, I'm very happy. Six-under opening round's always good. Made some nice putts at the end, Just a very solid round, just missed one green which was a bogey on 17. But some solid golf from tee to green and then you just have to make some putts."
Close behind were Andrew McArthur of Britain and Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium on 66.
Further down come members of Europe's Ryder Cup team.
Four of them are using the tournament as a warm-up before the transatlantic contest begins at Gleneagles in Scotland next week.
