CRI听力:France Confirms Killing of Hostage in Algeria
France has confirmed that a French national has been beheaded by an Algerian jihadist group linked to Islamic State militants.
The group calling itself Jund al-Khilafah, or Soldiers of the Caliphate, has released a video showing French mountaineer Herve Gourdel being killed.
It comes after the group's deadline for France to halt air strikes on IS targets in Iraq ran out.
55-year-old Gourdel was seized on Sunday.
French President Francois Hollande has condemned the killing, saying it only reinforces his determination to fight extremism.
"Gourdel was killed because he is French, because his country is fighting terrorism. Herve Gourdel is dead because he is the representative of a people, ours, that defends human dignity against barbarity. My determination is total. And this attack only reinforces it."
Hollande says French air strikes which began on IS targets in Iraq last week will continue.
The Algerian extremist group has split away from al-Qaida's North Africa branch and has pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State group.
