CRI听力:UN Adopts Binding Resolution on Foreign Fighters

2014-09-25来源:CRI

The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a binding resolution to combat the flow of foreign fighters attempting to join militant groups such as Islamic State.

The US-drafted resolution requires all UN member states to prosecute people who take part or attempt to take part in militant training or help to finance such activities.

The development comes as U.S President Barack Obama vows to lead a coalition to dismantle the Islamic State's network of death.

Obama made the comment while chairing the UN General Assembly in New York.

"There can be no reasoning - no negotiation - with this brand of evil. The only language understood by killers like this is the language of force. So the United States of America will work with a broad coalition to dismantle this network of death."

He says over 40 countries have offered to join the anti-IS coalition.

The U.S. President also implores the Middle East to reject the ideology that spawned groups like the IS, saying the task of rejecting extremism is a task for the people of the Middle East themselves.

A coalition of five Arab nations including Saudi Arabia joined the strikes on IS this week as U.S stepped up its military campaign both in Iraq and Syria.

It is reported that some 12,000 fighters from over 70 countries have traveled to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside self-declared jihadist groups.
