World number two Rafa Nadal enjoyed an emphatic return to singles action as he powered past Richard Gasquet, 6-4, 6-love.
The match was Nadal's first in three months since suffering a wrist injury which forced him to miss the US Open.
"Today is an important day for me, a positive feeling to be back on, on competition after a period of time that I really cannot, so very happy and for sure this is a positive thing to start with victory"
In other actino from the men's side, it was top seed Novak Djokovic cruising through his first round match with a 6-2, 6-1 drubbing of Spain's Guillmero Garcia-Lopez.
Britian's Andy Murray was upset in a first-round tie-break, but came back for an eventual 3-set win over Poland's Jerzy Jankowitz.
