CRI听力:South China Province Reports 1,189 New Dengue Fever Cases
Nearly 12-hundred new cases of dengue fever have been reported over the last 24-hours in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.
This brings the total number of cases in Guangdong to over 16-thousand, including four deaths.
The main epicenter for the outbreak is in the provincial capital, Guangzhou, which has reported nearly 14-thousand cases.
Local Health authorities say the outbreak is due to high temperatures and the wet weather gripping Guangdong, which has pushed the mosquito population to five-times its normal levels.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne, potentially fatal disease that affects between 50 and 100 million people in tropical and subtropical regions every year.
It normally causes fever, along with muscle and joint aches.
The virus has the potential to be deadly, particularly if the hemorrhagic strain breaks out.
So far there have been no reports of hemorrhagic Dengue in Guangdong.
