CRI听力:Pentagon Warns Kobane Could Still Fall
The Pentagon is warning the Syrian border town of Kobane could still fall, despite the US-led coalition air strikes on Islamic State targets, which have reportedly left hundreds of the insurgents dead.
The air strikes are in support of defending Kurdish ground forces.
U.S. Navy Rear Admiral John Kirby says more and more Islamic State fighters are pouring into Kobane.
"And so they have continued to flow fighters to Kobane, meaning there are more targets in and around Kobane. So one of the reasons why you're seeing more strikes there is because there's more ISIL there. We believe, and it's hard to give an exact number, but we believe that we have killed several hundred ISIL fighters, again, in and around Kobane."
Kobane has been the scene of weeks of fighting, which has forced most of its 400-thousand Kurdish residents to cross the border into Turkey.
The flood of Kurdish refugees across the Turkish border is creating a lot of problems for the Turkish government, as it already has its own issues with its indigenous Kurdish population.
Meanwhile, Turkish officials are rejecting earlier US suggestions that it's reached an agreement to allow the US air force to use one of its bases as a launching point for air-raids on Kobane.
