2014-10-24来源:CRI

Canadian police say the suspect in Wednesday's gun attack on the country's Parliament building acted alone.

Authorities also say there's no evidence to suggest he had any ties to the suspect in another fatal attack on a pair of Canadian soldiers just days earlier near Montreal.

The attacker, identified as 32-year-old Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, gunned down a soldier at a nearby war memorial before rampaging through parliament.

He was eventually gunned down by police.

Bob Paulson is with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Ottawa.

"The suspect is a Canadian citizen and we have information that he may have had dual Libyan-Canadian citizenship. I can and confirm that Zehaf-Bibeau was not one of the 90 high risk travelers that the RCMP is currently investigating. According to some accounts, he was an individual who may have held extremists beliefs."

Addressing the House of Commons, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is promising to speed up plans to give police in Canada more power in tracking terrorists.

"And as you know Mr. Speaker, in recent weeks I've been saying that our laws and police powers need to be strengthened in the area of surveillance, detention, and arrest. They need to be much strengthened, and I assure you Mr. Speaker, that work that is already underway will be expedited.""

Harper has also laid a wreath at the National War Memorial where the soldier was killed on Wednesday.

The attacks on Canadian soldiers this week has coincided with Canada sending fighter jets to take part in air strikes against Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria.
