CRI听力:UN Humanitarian Chief Seeks Stronger partership with China
United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos recently concluded a three day visit to Beijing, delivering an address at the Communication University of China and meeting with top officials to discuss China's commitment to international humanitarian relief efforts.
Amos says that China has a substantial role to play in tackling both regional and global humanitarian dilemmas.
"Our partnership with China is in a number of different levels. China is of course is a permanent member of the security council, there are a lot of country situations that go to the Security Council because they are caused by conflict, so it is very important the humanitarian aspects of this are understood. But it is also very important to me that I say thank you for the support we have received from China at the Security Council for our humanitarian work. "
Amos adds that China's efforts have made a substantial impact on the global response to the Ebola crisis.
"Most recently, that support has been for the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and that support has taken different forms. Some of it in the form of money, contributions to the multi-partner trust fund that has been established, contributions directly to the world food program, which is delivering food to people effected by the Ebola outbreak, but also capacity, in terms of people, health workers, and supplies. "
Going forward, Amos stresses that the United Nations wishes to continually strengthen its already close partnership with private NGO's and public organizations in China to asses future needs for international humanitarian relief and development projects.
"We will work with partners to try to get a shared sense of what are the needs, across a whole range of sectors, so food, health, education, water, sanitation, protection needs."
Amos's overarching message during the visit: through its generous contributions to worldwide humanitarian relief efforts, and its close cooperation with the international community, China is demonstrating its continued commitment to responsible global citizenship.
