CRI听力:Significant Progress Made in Fighting Ebola: UN

2014-11-06来源:CRI

A UN senior official is suggesting the fight against Ebola is seeing significant improvements.

Anthony Banbury, the head of the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response in West Africa says there are now reduced transmissions, fewer people catching Ebola and fewer people dying from Ebola.

The Guinean health ministry has confirmed the number of new cases in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea are declining.

Meantime, French researchers are working on an Ebola test that would give results in 15 minutes.

Researcher Fabrice Gallais says the test itself is not complicated.

"This test works like a traditional pregnancy test available in a pharmacy. We place a sample, a drop of blood, serum, plasma or urine, which moves towards this band. The virus then gets caught by antibodies already present on the bands. Then depending on the results you get a coloured reaction."

The current test results for Ebola can take up to 24 hours.

The virus has killed over 5-thousand people in West Africa since the current outbreak began in December.
