CRI听力:APEC Summit to Focus on FTA, Anti-corruption: Organizer
The lead organizer of the APEC leaders' summit here in Beijing says he expects a lot of discussion surrounding the potential establishment of both a Free Trade Agreement for the Asia-Pacific and a new anti-corruption deal.
Executive director, Doctor Allan Bollard, says Free Trade is the main priority.
"Ministers are likely to agree to some principles about what FTAAP (Free Trade Agreement of Asia-Pacific) should cover, and an information sharing mechanism on the whole range of regional and local trade agreements underway, and some workshops."
It's being reported the United States is trying to block China's attempt to use the APEC summit to push for an APEC free trade deal, as the US is leading negotiations on a new free-trade agreement known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership plan, or TPP.
The TPP does not involve China.
At the same time, Bollard says a new anti-corruption agreement is also to be worked on at the APEC summit.
"There's an agreement right across the APEC region that for efficient, modern economic production, you need to fight corruption, and that is reflected through in what will become the Beijing Statement on Anti-corruption."
Leaders from 21 Pacific-rim economies are set to converge in Beijing for the summit's leader's meeting on Monday.
