CRI听力:Security Measures Heightened in Jerusalem after Synagogue Attack

2014-11-19来源:CRI

Police officers have been deployed in different places in Jerusalem following the latest incident in the city, which has already been witness to a dramatic increase in violence over the past few weeks.

Two Palestinians armed with a gun and meat cleavers killed four rabbis in West Jerusalem before being shot dead.

A policeman later died of his wounds.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld.

"We're making security assessment, and security measures will be heightened over the next few days, extra police unit in and around different areas in order to deal with security issues and get to those suspects or potential suspects. That will continue as long as necessary."

Doctor Joyce Morel, who happens to live in the neighborhood, was one of the first on the scene.

"We heard shooting still going on inside the synagogue. It's extremely traumatic, extremely upsetting that people can just come into our synagogues and kill us. It's very very frightening."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is denouncing the attack as a Palestinian 'incitement against Israel.'

He's vowing retribution.

"We will uphold law, order and security throughout the streets of Jerusalem. I have decided to dismantle the homes of the terrorists and to enforce law, to make punishments more severe, and to outlaw certain organizations."

Palestinians living in east Jerusalem are expressing concerns about what's to come.

"I think this is a sign that thing is going to escalate more and more. Now it started like action and reaction, and it seems to be non-stop. This will affect the daily life. You cannot wake up every morning and listen to the news that there is a clash here or throwing stones or demonstration, tear gas, it makes you really worried, and the daily life is going to be more and more difficult."

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the attack.

Hamas, on the other hand, has taken a different position, calling on Palestinians to carry out similar attacks.
