CRI听力:UN Aid Official Valerie Amos to Step Down
The top UN official for humanitarian aid, Valerie Amos, is stepping down from her post.
Spokesperson for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Farhan Haq, has read a statement from the UN chief about Amos' decision.
"Miss Valerie Amos has informed me of her intention to step down as United Nations Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. I would like to express my utmost gratitude for her outstanding service to the United Nations and the humanitarian community and people in need."
No reason has been given for Amos' departure.
She's a former British minister for international development.
She has held the position of UN Humanitarian Chief since August 2010, overseeing major aid operations in Syria, as well as in South Sudan, Iraq and the Central African Republic.
Her departure comes as the UN struggles to cope with a record 50 million people displaced by conflict around the world.
Amos will stay on in her post until March.
