CRI听力:Canadian Found Guilty of Murdering Chinese Student
A Canadian man who killed and dismembered a Chinese student in Montreal two years ago has been found guilty of first-degree murder, with the jury delivering a verdict after more than a week of deliberation.
Thirty-two-year-old Luka Magnotta admitted to killing and dismembering 33-year-old engineering student Jun Lin, but pleaded not guilty on grounds of mental illness.
Magnotta was also convicted on charges related to his act of mailing Lin's body parts to schools and political parties across Canada.
Those charges include indignity to a human body, mailing obscene material, and harassing members of Parliament.
Prosecutor Louis Bouthillier lauded the jury for making it through a challenging trial.
"They had a lot of exhibits to examine. There was close to 11 weeks of testimony in this case. And obviously they had to work with difficult, very difficult legal issues. So, I obviously want to salute the work of the jury. Individually, the 12 jurors, they were really magnificent. They did an outstanding job, obviously."
The case gripped Canada in the spring of 2012 after Lin's body parts were found in the trash behind a Montreal apartment building and in packages mailed to political parties in Ottawa and to schools in Vancouver.
The mailed packages contained hands and feet wrapped in pink tissue paper as well as notes and poems.
