CRI听力:Former FIFA Vice President Denies 2010 World Cup Bribery

2015-06-05来源:CRI

A former vice-President of FIFA is rebuffing bribery allegations connected to South Africa's bid for the 2010 World Cup.

Jack Warner, who is among 14 people currently under indictment in the United States connected to FIFA's current corruption scandal, is denying ever accepting money to help secure South Africa's World Cup.

"It's not true, South Africa didn't give me any 10 million (US) dollars bribe. They didn't give me a bribe."

The US Justice Department says it has uncovered evidence that officials with South Africa paid 10-million US dollars to win votes from Warner and other FIFA voters to back the country's bid in 2004.

Warner, who quit FIFA in 2011, says he's cooperating with investigators.

"I will not stay quiet at aged 72. I will not stay quiet to allow them to deprive me of my freedom. I will also give them my knowledge of financial transactions at FIFA including, but not limited, to (FIFA President) Sepp Blatter."

South African officials have also denied suggestions the money given to FIFA was a bribe, saying the 10-million US dollars transferred to football's governing body was for football-related activities.

Former FIFA executive committee member Chuck Blazer has admitted to the courts that he and others on the governing body's ruling panel agreed to receive bribes in exchange for votes when deciding the host nations for the 1998 and 2010 World Cups.

The revelation has emerged in court documents connected to a plea deal Blazer worked out with US prosecutors.
