CRI听力:UN's Chief designate visits China, mapping out future development

2016-11-29来源:CRI

Guterres and the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks on Monday morning.

This was at the invitation of the Chinese government, which aims to further enhance the mutual trust and map out the future development between the two sides.

During the meeting, Guterres said people around the world are suffering threats, such as climate change, population growth, food insecurity, and water scarcity.

Facing a multiplication of new challenges with old conflicts still unsolved, the UN Secretary-General designate believes multilateralism is in great need.

"We see that economic progress and technology progress have not been able to reduce inequality. And inequality has become an important factor of instability in the world. Which means we're seeing global problems for which we need global solutions. And we need the strengthening of governance and mechanisms of multilateral natures. I want to underline that China is today a solid pillar of multilateralism in the world."

Guterres thanked China for being supportive, and said the country has a more important role to play.

"China is one of the largest financial supporters of UN. At the same time, China is providing a very important contribution to our peacekeeping operations and with more initiatives being announced for the near future. New funds, new international bank, and new forms of international cooperation like the One Belt One Road initiative, all these actions give a very important contribution to the success of UN activities in the world."

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, countries should work together to uplift the influence of UN.

And China, serving as a founding member of UN and the permanent member of the Security Council, is willing to further cooperation.

"This year marks the 45th anniversary of China restoring its lawful seat at the United Nations. We' ll work closely together for early and best results of the implementation of the key outcomes of President Xi's participation, in last year's UN Summit to mark its 70th anniversary. And we'll follow up on the outcomes of Premier Li Keqiang's participation in this year's UN General Assembly sessions."
Wang Yi also highlighted, countries should uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, in solving global affairs in a chaotic world.

"The UN Charter should be regarded as the basic norms, governing current contemporary international relations. It must be held in the most faithful way. And the collective security system established by the Charter should serve as the important guarantee for ending wars and promoting peace."

The UN's next chief will begin his five-year term from January 1st, 2017.
