Leaders of China and the United Arab Emirates have pledged to further strengthen bilateral relations at a meeting in Beijing.

The meeting between President Xi Jinping and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan saw both sides reaffirm commitments to safeguarding multilateralism and cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Xi Jinping called on the two sides to forge closer relations at this critical moment in history.

"During your visit, the two sides will issue a joint statement on strengthening the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership, which will be another important guideline document in the history of China-UAE relations. This year marks the 70th founding anniversary of the People's Republic and the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the China-UAE relationship. I'm willing to work with you to ensure the partnership will yield new results to better benefit the people of the two countries under the current complicated and volatile circumstances."

Xi Jinping voiced hope of realizing the goal of 200 billion U.S. dollars of two-way trade by 2030.

He also said China supports the UAE in opening Chinese-language teaching in its 200 schools.

On the situation in the Gulf region, the Chinese president called on all sides concerned to stay calm and exercise restraints.

Sheikh Mohammed applauded the development of bilateral ties.

"You made a historic visit to the UAE last year, during which the two sides ushered the bilateral ties in a new stage, giving a strong proof of the relationship between the two heads of state, the two governments and the two peoples."

He said that the UAE stands ready to play a bigger role in the Belt and Road Initiative and expand cooperation with China in energy, finance, aviation, science and technology.

He spoke highly of China's efforts to protect the rights of ethnic minorities, vowing to boost security cooperation in the fight against extremist forces including "East Turkestan".

This is the crown prince's fourth visit to China.

After the talks, the two leaders witnessed the exchange of a series of cooperation documents between the two sides.
