2. Listening 1.1. You will hear a conversation between an employment consultant and a new client. Before you listen you have some time to look at questions 1 to 4. Now as you listen answer questions 1 to 4.
M: Hello, Karen, is it?
W: Yes, that’s right. Hi.
M: Come on through to my office. So we can have a chat.
W: OK. Great.
M: So, Karen. How can I help you?
W: Well, I just moved about town recently and I am looking for a job. I have been checking the papers and employments sites on the internet, but I haven’t had much luck. A friend told me that this agency was good. She said that the staffs were really helpful. And I thought joining an agency would help me find a job more quickly. I have to confess though, I mainly came here because I hope to allow me some other people in the same situation. It’s easy to feel like you are the only person in the world without job. And that can get quite depressing.
M: It certainly can. It’s easy to fall into that way of thinking when you are unemployed for a while. Even people who are normally very optimistic can get depressed very quickly when they are looking for a job. That’s definitely one of the advantages of joining an agency. We regularly run work shops and social gatherings for our clients. So you get to up-date your skills, meet people, and basically not feel alone. So what kind of position are you after?
W: Umm, I just come back from decent teaching overseas. That included some self-administrative work too. I wouldn’t mind in a bitter there. But I got a degree in business. My major was marketing. So I’d really like a job in that area.
M: Umm, OK. We’ve got a couple of jobs on books that you might be interested in. What kind of salary and conditions do you have in mind?
W: I haven’t really thought too much about salary. I don’t want starting at the bottom this day. But as far as hours go I don’t want to work the usual 9 to 5. I want to start early and finish early in the afternoons. What time work would be OK. It’s just I am going to be studying as well so, let’s see other things. I don’t want the job the loss of travelling fault. I just want to have time for it.
M: All right. Now, on your resume you’ve listed your work history and qualifications. Do you have any special skills or other certain areas you’ve had a lot of experiences with?
W: Well, I can speak conversational Japanese. And I can use a lot of computer programs such as word, excel, powerpoint, and so on.
M: Great. What about professional experiences? Have you got experiences writing reports, giving presentations, things like that?
W: I’ve written some reports in marketing materials, such as brochures with my supervisor. But I haven’t had a chance to give any presentations. Since I have worked in Japan and China for 2 years, I am used to dealing with people from other cultures and answering questions from students. I am giving school tolls to potential students.
M: OK. Good. I will take the information you’ve just given me and rework your resume a bit before you send it out today. Now, as I said, we have a couple of jobs.
That is the end of listening 1.1.
