[00:07.13]Later that morning,Annie attends a special class for students
[00:12.93]who are non-native speakers.
[00:16.74]The tutor is interviewing an ex-student of the College.
[00:22.05]For Questions 24 to 32,listen to the interview,
[00:29.44]and complete each sentence with a suitable word or phrase.
[00:34.93]First,you have some time to look at the Example and questions.
[00:42.11]Now listen to the interview, and answer Questions 24 to 32.
[00:50.21]Tutor:Today I have with me Raul Sanchez,
[00:55.12]who was a student at this college,er...how long ago?
[01:00.92]Raul:I was here one and a half...no,two years ago now.
[01:06.32]Tutor:Raul was a student in this English class
[01:11.03]and he is here to tell us about the many problems
[01:15.62]facing a non-native speaker in a British tertiary institution.
[01:21.53]What have you been doing since you graduated,Raul?
[01:26.13]Raul:I was quite lucky when I left the college,
[01:30.02]because I got a job pretty quickly with the London Dental Council.
[01:36.03]I'm still with them.
[01:38.93]Tutor:Tell the class what course you took here at the college?
[01:43.11]Raul:Yes,I originally wanted to work in advertising,
[01:47.99]but I found it was too hard because of my English.
[01:52.69]And so I changed my direction,and,well,I'm glad I did,
[01:58.80]because I've now got an Associate Diploma in Dental Hygiene,
[02:04.79]and that's how I managed to get a job with the Council.
[02:09.31]Tutor:What exactly do you do with the Council?
[02:12.88]Raul:I work with a dentist,
[02:16.07]making sure that the patients are taken care of
[02:20.36]and all the necessary tools have been cleaned and prepared for use.
[02:25.84]Sometimes I must assist the dentist in complicated procedures.
[02:31.43]It's a demanding job,but I like it.
[02:35.61]Tutor:You perform dental surgery?
[02:39.01]Raul:Not quite,
[02:41.70]but I do use tools to make the patients feel more comfortable during the operation.
[02:48.20]A lot of my time is spent in general checkups, cleaning teeth
[02:53.69]and demonstrating good dental pracctices.I also develop x-rays.
[02:59.80]Tutor:What exactly were the problems when you first arrived at the college?
[03:04.69]Raul:I was very shy,you know.
[03:08.16]I couldn't communicate with the students in my class because most of them were British
[03:14.85]...my English was not very good.
[03:18.64]But I,I thought everything was OK.
[03:23.02]until I received the result of my first examination.
[03:28.12]The tutor was worried why I was so quiet in class.
[03:32.92]I told her it was because I was afraid to ask a question.
[03:38.23]So she suggested that I talk to the school counselor.
[03:43.11]Tutor:What advice did the counselor give?
[03:46.69]Raul:Well,she was very kind and understanding,
[03:51.29]and I realized that I was doing the wrong course.
[03:55.81]You have to be an 'extrovert'...you know outgoing.
[04:00.59]I think it's a personal thing with me.
[04:04.38]You had to give a lot of opinions, and I am shy.
[04:09.86]So,she suggested I ask more questions in class,
[04:15.45]so I made it a rule to ask at least one or two questions every lesson.
[04:21.15]Tutor:So you swapped courses and began to talk more in class.
[04:26.06]Was there anything else that the counselor suggested?
[04:30.24]Raul:Yes,she said I shouldn't live with students from my own country.
[04:36.11]She suggested I should share a house with some British students.
[04:41.42]So I did,and my English improved much faster.
[04:46.51]Tutor:Are there any problems you currently have with English?
[04:51.00]Raul:Of course,I used to have a lot of trouble
[04:55.50]with the technical vocabulary in my field,
[04:59.81]but I picked it up very quickly.
[05:03.49]Now,it's mostly...
[05:06.99]I have difficulty trying to understand the colloquial language of Britain;
[05:13.39]the way people express themselves here is sometimes strange to me.
[05:19.50]Tutor:I see.How do you increase your vocabulary?
[05:25.20]Please give us some examples.
[05:29.30]Raul:Well,I really like to watch movies.
[05:33.90]I recommend that you watch movies
[05:37.79]you have already seen subtitled in your native language
[05:43.17]but this time only listen to the English, don't read the subtitles!
[05:49.68]Also,it can be quite helpful to keep a journal of new expressions you hear
[05:56.68]so you can ask your English friends about them.
[06:01.48]Tutor:Let's talk more about your course at the college.
[06:07.28]Do you remember any study projects you were involved in?
[06:12.38]Well once we did a survey on the effects of different breakfast cereal
[06:18.57]on children's teeth.
[06:21.96]The ages ranged from 5-12 years old
[06:26.46]and we interviewed over 100 different kids from each age group,
[06:32.46]it was quite a big project!
[06:35.96]We discovered that many cereals that were advertised as being healthy
[06:41.45]were just as bad for teeth as the well known sugar-coatedbrands.
[06:47.35]Tutor:Why was that?
[06:50.04]Tutor:It's complicated, but one of the main reasons
[06:55.24]was that many of these so-called "healthy" brands
[06:59.92]use just as much sugar as non-healthy breakfast cereals.
[07:05.30]However,there are a few brands,such as "Cheerios"
[07:10.99]that contain many nutrients that help teeth grow
[07:16.27]and do not cause decay that leads to cacities and other bad dental hygiene.
[07:23.06]The problem is that many children become addicted to sweet,
[07:28.26]sugary cereal very young, and do not want to change.
[07:34.16]Some children even add more sugar to very healthy cereal such as corn flakes,
[07:40.64]which completely destroys the benefits of the cereal for children's teeth.
[07:46.34]Tutor:Um,one last question. What about your future?
[07:52.14]Do you have any immediate plans?
[07:55.43]Well in the short-term I'll continue to work as a dental assistant
[08:01.33]and gain more experience.
[08:04.62]After two years,I plan to attend dental school to be come a dentist.
[08:10.61]My long-term goal is to open my own dental practice here in Britain,
[08:16.30]or maybe return to my own country and open a practice there.
[08:21.92]Tutor:I see. Now,does anyone have a question for Raul?Yes.In the first row...
