After more than four years of brutal continuous fighting and aerial bombardments, the staggering extent of destruction in Aleppo is beginning to emerge. Footage captured by the Associated Press on Saturday showed blown-out buildings along debris-strewn streets. The Syrian government took full control of Aleppo on Thursday.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said the country's military has crushed the extremist group Boko Haram and its remaining fighters are on the run. But the threat of Islamic State group militants remains.
The Obamas used the weekly White House address to reflect on the president's eight years in office and deliver a Christmas message to the nation. It was the Obamas' final White House Christmas message and included a clip from their first attempt at that address seven years ago.
Thousands of pilgrims and tourists from around the world gathered with locals for Christmas Eve celebrations in Bethlehem. The West Bank's Manger Square was illuminated by festive red and golden lights and a large Christmas tree.
