The United States House of Representatives has overwhelmingly backed a bill to make all private security contractors in Iraq subject to American law. Three weeks after guards from the Blackwater Company were involved in a lethal shooting in Baghdad. Before the vote, the White House condemned the bill, saying it could have unintended and intolerable consequences for national security. Jonathan Beale reports from Washington.

Democrats said there was no excuse for legal immunity to be given to security contractors working in Iraq. The House voted 389-30 in favor of a new law. They would make all private contractors working for the US government subject to US laws. Those private firms working for the Department of Defense are currently subject to existing legislation. But it might not cover those private firms such as Blackwater working for the US State Department.

The United Nations envoy to Burma Ibrahim Gambari has briefed the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon about his talks with the Burmese military authorities. Following the suppression last week of anti-government protests, Mr. Gambari is now due to address the UN Security Council. From New York here is our UN correspondent Laura Trevelyan.

Mr.Gambari will speak to the UN Security Council on Friday in an open session and that's when the world will hear first-hand how his visit went. However, diplomats are cautioning against expecting too much from Mr. Gambari. He's only one man, say officials, there's a limit to what he can achieve. It's possible the UN Security Council will ask him to return to Burma very soon, in an attempt to see whether talks between the military government and the opposition led by Aung San Suu Kyi are indeed possible.

The widow and five children of the former military ruler of Chile, General Augusto Pinochet have been arrested. They are accused of illegally transferring 27 million dollars to foreign banks. Daniel Schweimler reports.

A lawyer for the Pinochet family Pablo Rodriguez said he was astonished by the arrests and he was sure the court of appeal would overturn them. But the Judge Carlos Cerda says he has thousands of pages of evidence implicating Pinochet's widow, Lucia Hiriart, and their 5 children in the case. The widow was taken to hospital with high blood pressure following her arrest. The judge also ordered the detention of 17 other close personal aides to General Pinochet.

President Bush says he's deeply concerned about the possibility of foreign interference in the coming presidential election in Lebanon. He said the message not to intervene had been sent to countries such as Syria which supports Lebanese opposition parties. Speaking after talks with the Lebanese parliamentary majority leader Saad Hariri, Mr. Bush said he would send a senior military commander to Beirut to assess how the United States would help the government confront militants. Syria has been widely blamed for the killings of anti-Syrian figures.
