Pakistan's military leader General Pervez Musharraf has called for national reconciliation after winning a comfortable victory in Saturday's presidential election. General Musharraf also appealed to his opponents not to join strikes or protests against him. The Supreme Court could still disqualify him from serving what would be his second term in office if it upholds further legal objections by opposition parties. The Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said the election showed Pakistan's democratic credentials.

With this election, the whole country and the whole world will get the message that in Pakistan, democracy is alive and the people of Pakistan know what is good, and they are making Musharraf successful.

The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has been attacked by opposition parties for his decision to rule out an early election after weeks of speculation about his intentions. The main opposition leader David Cameron accused him of weak leadership and making a humiliating retreat. Joe Coburn reports.

Gordon Brown's supporters will be hoping that the entire election episode will soon be forgotten by the public at least. But the Prime Minister will have to face the fallout after allowing talk of an autumn poll to reach fever pitch. He has already been accused by the opposition of losing his nerve. Despite no election, returning to business as usual would be difficult for the Prime Minister certainly in the short term, even with big parliamentary announcements on Iraq and the government's spending plans for public services. But the bigger worry for the prime minister is whether yesterday's announcement has any long-term impact on his premiership.

A leader of the outlawed Basque separatist party in Spain has accused the central government of making a declaration of war against the independence movement. Pernando Barrena was referring to the arrest on Thursday of more than 20 members of the party known as Batasuna, the political wing of ETA, Warran Bull reports.

Perando Barrena is the only main leader of Batasuna who was not detained on Thursday. He described the arrests as a kidnapping, and said the Spanish government wanted to slam the door on independence for the Basque region. But he added that repression would not make the separatists back down. The detentions have been followed by demonstrations by thousands of people, and sporadic violent incidents in the Basque region. But the position of the Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is clear. Following the arrest, he said ETA had only one option which was to lay down its arms to abandon violence.

In Northern Taiwan, more than one meter of rain fell in places as typhoon Krosa caused flooding and landslides.

More than 1, 000 Iraqis have taken part in a protest in Baghdad against plans to build concrete barriers to separate mainly Sunni and Shiite areas of the capital. The US military hopes the wall can reduce sectarian violence in the city. The crowds marching through western Baghdad carried banners and chanted "No to the war, no to America". The US military has made no comment on the demonstration.

The host France has reached the semifinals of the Rugby World Cup. The French beat the tournament favorite New Zealand in Cardiff by 20 points to 18. It was the second surprise result of the day. Earlier the defending champions England has beaten Australia by 12 points to 10 in Marseille. The English captain Phil Vickery says his men are finally fulfilling their potential.

You know we got consoled, you know, we have proven it, you know, for large periods of the tournament so far, you know, which come in for a lot of criticism, and some of the criticism is justified, but you know, look around the team, look at the good players we have, look at the coaches we have. You know, we could get consoled, I just think, sometimes, you know, we need a belief.

England and France now meet in the last four. The two other quarterfinals will be played on Sunday, when South Africa play Fiji, and Scotland take on Argentina.

They used teargas against thousands of young demonstrators who were protesting against the closure of the youth center earlier in the year and had tried unsuccessfully to occupy a new building.
