The former media mogul Conrad Black, once the head of one of the world's largest newspaper businesses has been sentenced in Chicago to six and a half years in prison for fraud. Lord Black, a Canadian born member of the British House of Lords was convicted in July with three others of stealing millions of dollars from shareholders of his former company Hollinger International, relating to the sale of hundreds of the firm's titles. Our correspondent James Gordon was at the trial.

Lord Black and three of his co-defendants were convicted in July of mail fraud for pocketing millions of dollars of Hollinger International's money. That's the media group which own the Daily Telegraph in Britain and other newspapers around the world including the Chicago Sun Times here and the Jerusalem Post. Prosecutors said that the money should have gone to the shareholders of his newspaper empire, but instead Black was using money as though he owned it outright . He was essentially using the business as a piggy bank and of course it was a public company which meant above all obligations to its shareholders.

After four days of bombing and fighting, Afghan troops and their NATO-led foreign allies have entered Mushkala, the only sizeable town in Afghanistan held by Taliban guerillas. By night-fall an Afghan commander said his men were only a few hundred metres from the center of Mushakala. Taliban fighters said they'd withdrawn to avoid further casualties in the town. The Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Afghanistan still needs military help from the outside world. "We would like to have forces enough to secure Afghanistan against atrocities from terrorism. At the same time, we would like to have the international community continue to add to the building of Afghan forces. So that, Afghanistan can be ready in time to take on the responsibility of defending the Afghan country with Afghan institutions and Afghan ability. "

The government of Cuba said it will sign two major United Nations agreements on civil and political rights. The Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque said the communist government would sign the agreements early next year. From Havana, Michael Voss has more.

Under international law there are two main legally binding protocols which make up the United Nations' Bill of Human Rights. One covers economic, social and cultural issues, the other civil and political rights. Early next year Cuba will sign both of the these protocols. This commits the country amongst the other things to allowing freedom of expression and association and the right to travel abroad.

President Putin of Russia has backed one of his first Deputy Prime Ministers Dmitry Medvedev to succeed him when he leaves office next year. Mr. Putin's support puts Mr. Medvedev in the strongest possible position in presidential elections next March. Mr. Putin has made it clear he will retain a significant national leadership role after he steps down as president. Mr. Medvedev is a long-time aide of the president.

The former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has rejected the charges against him on the first day of his human rights abuse trial in the capital Lima. Mr. Fujimori who was extradited from Chile earlier this year is accused of having approved the activities of army death squad in the 1990's. Mr. Fujimori told the panel of Supreme Court judges that he had done nothing wrong and was an innocent man.

Thanks to my government, the human rights of twenty five million Peruvians were rescued with no exceptions. If any detestable acts were committed, then I condemned them. But they were not done under my orders. Because of that Mr. president , I reject the charges totally.

The Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi has held talks with President Nicolas Sarkozy on his first state visit to France in more than thirty years. The two countries signed contracts worth almost fifteen billion dollars, including an agreement for France to help to develop nuclear energy in Libya with the supply of one or more reactors. Libya also confirmed orders for 21 Airbus planes worth more than two billion dollars.

As days of fighting continue in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, U. N. officials have confirmed that rebels loyal to the dissident General Laurent Nkunda have retaken several positions from the Congolese army. Earlier the rebels had denied government reports that they had suffered heavy losses in the latest defensive.

The rock band Led Zeppelin have played their first concert in nineteen years, a million people applied to going to a ballot for twenty thousand seats at the venue in London. One fan paid more than a hundred and seventy thousand dollars for a pair of tickets in a charity auction. The band whose hits include "stairway to heaven" and "Whole Lotta Love" was one of the most famous heavy rock bands in the early 1970's.
