Georgia says Russian warplanes have bombed the country's international airport on the outskirts of the capital Tbilisi. The Interior Ministry said a warplane factory and a military base had also been targeted. Loud explosions echoed across the capital. The Georgian ambassador to the UN, Irakli Alasania, told the Security Council that Russia had invaded Georgia and was beginning an occupation of the country.

"Inhuman and indiscriminate aerial bombardments of the Georgian territory continue. The scale of devastating destructions and loss of innocent lives has yet to be assessed. Russian ground troops, armed invasion, transformed already in a full scale occupations of parts of Georgian territory. "

The Russian Defense Ministry dismissed claims of the airport bombing as disinformation. But the Ministry said that Russian warships sank a Georgian missile patrol vessel which it said had attacked them. Russia also says fighting is continuing despite Georgia's earlier declaration of a ceasefire in South Ossetia. Moscow's ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, said that in any case a ceasefire was not enough. Georgian forces had to withdraw completely from South Ossetia for hostilities to end.

"I think we have expressed, explained in considerable detail why a simple call for ceasefire is not good enough and that some other steps which have [been] outlined need to be taken in order for the situation to come back to normal."

The United States says it intends to introduce a resolution at the United Nations Security Council condemning Russia's military attack on Georgia. In scenes, many say, were reminiscent of the Cold War, Russian and American ambassadors traded barbs with America saying Russia's real motive was regime change. Heather Alexander reports from the UN.

Tensions ran high in the chamber earlier with America seemingly giving up on a diplomatic solution. They say they intend to introduce a resolution which would condemn Russia, the US ambassador saying that their action in the region far exceeds what would be appropriate if they were trying to protect South Ossetia. The US says Russia's real aim is to overthrow the pro-western government there; Russia, on the other hand, says Georgia are committing genocide in South Ossetia. They say Georgian claims that they've called a ceasefire are a lie.

Tens of thousands of people have fled a heavy aerial attack on Georgian ... near the border with the breakaway region of South Ossetia. A spokesman for the United Nations refugee agency said around 46,000 people have left their homes and were in need of shelter. The authorities in Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia have announced a full military mobilization saying they've sent 1.000 troops to drive Georgian forces out of the northern Kodori Gorge.
