Several districts of Syria's biggest city Allepo have come under heavy bombardment. An armed rebel says the government offensive to flush them out . Ian Pannell has been in Allepo throughout the day.

I saw residents from burst light trying to get out, trucks loaded with families of three generations, grandparents, children, all crammed into vehicles and trying to head out into the countryside. From again first light, there was a sound of intensive artillery bombardment from far away from where we were staying. And that continued in different areas throughout the day, we saw helicopters overhead, we heard jet too. But it would probably be skirmishing and fighting which stuck out the most. There were already clashes between government forces and the armed opposition in many neighbourhood.

The Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said that tragety was unfolding in Allepo but it was unrealistic to expect the Syrian government to to accept the presence of an armed opposition.

“While armed opposition groups are occupying cities, trying to creat buffer zones so they can set up a transitional government, how can you expect Syrian government to say yes, go ahead, overthrow me. This is simply unrealistic. Not because we are backing the regime but because it just wouldn’t work.
   
The French President Froncios Hallonde urged the members of the United Nations Security Council to interven in Syria as soon as possible.

The Kenyan Red Cross says more than 20000 Ethiopians have crossed into Kenya to escape clashes between two ethnic groups. The Red Cross says Ethiopian forces have intervened to halt the fighting but the people continue to flee across the border. The refugees have been housed in schools near a mosque just inside Kenya. Ethiopian websites said at least 50 people were killed in three days in clashes.

In the first major showdown in the swimming pool of the London 2012 Olympics, the 400 meters’ individual medley has been won by the American swimmer Ryan Lochte. It’s the first gold medal in the games for the United States. The 16-year-old swimmer from China Ye Shiwen to gold in the women’s 400m medley in a world record time. Our sports correspondent Alex reports.

“What was supposed to be a duel between the American Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps never remotely materialized while the former dominated from the start to finish. The defending champion from Beijing was always struggling to stay in touch. It wasn’t his favorite event but to completely miss onto the medals was unexpected. Michael Fillpes wasn’t the only athlete to fail to live up to the high hopes for the first four days’ of competition. The British Breaking King Mark Cavendish  was favored to land the host nation its first medal of the games but he finished a long way behind the leaders in cycling’s road race which was won by the Kazakhstan veteran Aleander. ”

The Ukrainian football star Andriy Shevchenko has said he is retiring from the sport and begin a new career in politics. Shevchenko, a former European footballer of the year, who won the Champions League with AC Milan, said he wanted to do something for his country. From Kyev, here is David Stern.

Adrew Shevchenko announced he would be joining Ukraine Forward, a pro-business political party led by Natalia Korolevska, a prominent opposition politician. He said that he would foucs on issues connected to the social sector and sport. Ukraine Forward is taking part in the country's parliamentary elections in October. Shevchenko is the second well known sport figure to enter Ukraine's political arena . Heavywight champion Vitali Klitschko heads his own political party.

The wife of Oswaldo Paya, a prominent Cuban activist who died in a car crash last Sunday, has rejected the official report which blamed driver error. The government statement said the driver of the car was speeding when it hit a tree killing Mr. Paya and another Cuban opposition activist. Mr. Paya's wife, Ofelia Acevedo, says she had not been permited access to the driver and the second survivor of the crash both being in custody since it happened.

And borderguards in Bangladesh have seized more than 1000 tortoises and turtles that have been smuggled from India. They challenged two people on motorbike who sped off, dropping a sack full of the live animals. Wild life experts said the sack contain at least two endangerd species of tortoises. They think the animals were destined for east Asian countries.
