Olympic and world records have been smashed in shooting, cycling and walking. Great Britain has dominated track and field events with Jessica Ennis winning gold in heptathlon, Greg Rutherford in the long jump and Mo Farah in the men's 10,000m. The celebrity Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt has also made his first appearance when he is sitting in the 100m. The sprinter told the BBC he had expected enthusiastic reception he received in the Olympic stadium.

The Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has declared the fencer Ruben Limardo a hero of the nation. Limardo claimed Venezuela's first gold medal in more than 4 decades when he won the men's individual title in the Epee event. President Chavez said he would hand Limardo a replica of the sword of the South African liberation fighter Simon Boliva. Limardo won the affection of the sport fans when he used public transport to return to the athletes’ village.

Rebels in the Syrian city of Aleppo say they have come under the heaviest bombardment from government forces since fighting began there two weeks ago. There has also been fighting in the Syrian capital Damascus affecting several suburbs. Richard Galpin reports.

It has been another day of intense fighting in Syria's most important cities. In Aleppo, military jets and helicopters were in action trying to dislodge rebels fighters from their positions inside the northern city. More people have also been fleeing, fearing an all around assault by the army and air force which has recently received reinforcements. There have also been battles in the capital Damascus. The rebels here as in Aleppo are holding out much longer than expected.

State television in Iran has reported that gunmen have kidnapped Iranian pilgrims visiting a Shia shrine in the Syrian capital Damascus. An official of the Iranian embassy said the pilgrims were on a visit to Sayyida Zainab as mask screen gunmen stopped their bus.

The United Nations has urged the authorities in Burma to fully investigate the violence last month between members of the Buddhist majority and minority Muslims. It has been reported that almost 60 people were killed. Speaking at the end of a six-day of visit to Burma, a senior UN official, Tomas Ojea Quintana, said he heard numerous of reports of human rights violations. Mr. Quintana said Burmese soldiers and police officers have been accused of killings, torture and arbitrary arrests following a week of sectarian clashes.

The American President Barack Obama has welcomed the oil sharing deal between Sudan and South Sudan. Mr. Obama said the agreement opened the door to a future of great prosperity. The deal comes after dispute that saw South Sudan shut down all its oil production in January which left both counties close to bankruptcy. The agreement has subjected to a successful resolution of further border and security issues. A spokesman of Africa Union, Abdul Ahmed told the BBC the talk should resume towards the end of August.

They are meeting again. They will reassemble back in Addis around 22, and we # 22. And that's when they will start to negotiate regard the implementation on this agreement.

Officials in Pakistan have suspended a number of police officers accused of parading a man and a woman naked in public. The naked couple was dragged to the street in the town of Gambat as punishment for allegedly trying to have sex outside marriage. Shahzeb Jillani reports.

What makes this incident particularly shocking is that it was guided out by the police and filmed on cell phones. The footage during around locals shows the naked man is being push around and abused by police officers inside its own bra misers. Amid screaming and shouting, when the man tries to cover himself, his clothes are slashed from him. The officers detained his hands behind his back and forced him and his allegedly partner to walk naked to the police station.
