India's BJP has won a clear majority in the Indian parliament with more than 3/4 of the seats announced. The results mean the party will be able to govern without coalition partners. The BJP leader expected to become prime minister Narendra Modi said his government would work hard to fulfill the dreams of more than a billion Indians. Andrew North reports from Mr. Modi's victory rally in Gujarat.

There is an amazing atmosphere here in the center of Ahmedabad as Narendra Modi addresses a large rally of his supporters after his victory. The crowd is full of young people when it was young voters in the middle class who were crucial to his win. And they cheer everything he says. There is a mood of euphoria and expectation here, a sense that India is on the verge of a new era with a Narendra Modi as their prime minister. 

The Congress Party which has governed India for most of the 67 years since independence suffered its biggest-ever defeat. World leaders have been congratulating Narendra Modi on his party's victory in the Indian elections. Among them was US President Barack Obama, as Barbara Plett Usher reports from Washington.
