The leftwing Syriza party of Alexis Tsipras has been returned to parliament in Greece after winning the country's second general election this year. He told crowds of jubilant supporters in the capital Athens that the result gave Syriza a new and clear mandate to rid Greece of the things that were keeping it stuck in the past. Richard Gaopen is in Athens. Syriza has won this election by a much bigger margin than any opinion polls had predicated with the lead of 7 percent over its main rival the conservative party New Democracy. Already a right wing anti-austerity party has agreed to join forces with Syriza giving Mr Tsipras a slim majority in parliament of five seats. It will be a carbon copy of the previous administration led by Mr Tspiras which was elected last January and resigned in August after dozens of its own MPs rebelled over the signing of a new bailout deal which included more harsh austerity measures. A Syriza spokeswoman has said the government will implement the bailout agreement reached with international creditors but will hold tough negotiations over the country's massive debt.

Pope Francis has met the former Cuban president Fidel Castro at his home in Havana. The Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi said the meeting lasted forty minutes and the two men discussed world affairs and religion and exchanged presents. The Pope has given to Fidel Castro some books, books about the gospel, about the humor in their religion. And Fidel has given to the Pope a book “Fidel and Religion”. They were very very kind both dedication for the Pope.

A Republican candidate for the US presidency has said Islam is incompatible with the American constitution. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon said he would never agree to a Muslim becoming US president. I will not advocate that we put a Muslin in charge of this nation. I absolutely will not agree with that. Responding to the comments, James Zogby, the president of the Arab American Institute told the BBC that Mr Carson'e views were downright stupid. 'Carson simply is making a bigoted comment. And one would expect him to know better as a neurosurgeon who is running for president. But apparently he doesn't. He is planning to debase the Republican party.

The Head of the International Atomic Energy Agency has visited the controversial Parchin military site in Iran. Yukiya Amano arrived in Tehran on Sunday, one what western diplomats say is a key visit if an agreement on the uranium nuclear program is to come into effect. International inspectors have only limited access to the complex where western nations believe Iran may have tried to develop nuclear arms.

Tens of thousands of people have taken part in a rally in Istanbul attended by Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan to protest against attacks by Kurdish separatists rebels in the southeast of the country. The crowds heard the speakers condemn the violence in which dozens of police and soldiers have been killed since the collapse of ceasefire in July between the government and the Kurdish Standard Workers Party, the PKK.

The flow of migrants and refugees through the Balkans to western Europe has continued throughout the weekend. Austria says it's expecting 20,000 arrivals, most of them through Hungary and Croatia. The charity Save The Children says as many as one in four of those children could be unaccompanied. Alix Klan works with the agency in Croatia. Most of the unaccompanied children were being through without parents or anyone older to protect them. They are moving in groups, small groups, often with siblings or friends around age 12 to 16.

West Africa mediator seeking to reverse a military coup in Burkina Faso have put forward proposals to end the crisis. Thomas Fessy reports. After a weekend of talks, the coup leader general Gen Diendere is still in charge. West African mediators failed to have him hand over the power back to civilians. Instead, their proposed plan to restore transitional authorities grant amnesty to those behind a coup and hold of elections in November will be discussed at a summit of west African leaders on Tuesday. Regional institutions may then approve it but getting general Gen Diendere to agree to it is not a done deal. He may continue to rule by the gun until a solution is found.

Reports from Northeast Nigeria say there have been three explosions in the town of Maiduguri. And eyewitness said the attack happened near a mosque. Unconfirmed reports say 8 people have been killed and many other injured. No one has claimed responsibility for the blasts.
