Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has demanded the cancellation of the outcome of the independence referendum held in the country's Kurdish region. He was addressing in parliament in Baghdad. A result in vote in favor of independence is expected after Monday's poll, earlier the Kurdish leadership called on Baghdad to hold talks.

A huge crowd has attended a funeral in Tehran for an Iranian soldier who was captured and beheaded by Islamic State Militants. Mohsen Hojaji was taken captive last month whilst fighting in Syria. An image of the young man standing stoically moment before his death moved many Iranians. State television devoted hours of live coverage to his funeral presentation as it moved through the streets of the capital.

The leaders of Canada and Britain have criticized the US decision to impose tariffs of more than 200% on planes built by the Canadian firm Bombardier. The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he would fight unwarranted protectionism. His British counterpart Theresa May described the preliminary ruling by the US department of commerce as bitterly disappointing.

Human Rights Watch has accused the army in Cameroon of forcibly returning at least 100,000 asylum seekers to neighboring Nigeria. It said some of the Nigerians who fled the Boko Haram insurgency were tortured and sexually abused. The campaign group said the violence was in retaliation for Boko Haram attacks on Cameroon.

Thousands of people in cities across South Africa have been marching in protest against corruption. The demonstration was called by the main trade union federation. Protesters accused president Jacob Zuma's government of widespread corruption in the awarding of contracts, which it denies.
