Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro says he plans to stand again in earlier presidential elections that are to be held by the end of April. Analysts say he wants to take advantage of the weakness of the opposition as his main political challengers are in self-imposed exile or in jail.

The Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has confirmed he’ll go to the opening ceremony of next Month’s Winter Olympics in South Korea. There had been a speculation he might snub the games because of a long running dispute between the two countries over comfort women, Koreans who were forced to work in Japanese military brothels during the Second World War.

At least 27 people have been killed and dozens wounded in Libya’s second city Benghazi after two bombs hit worshipers leaving a mosque. The city has seen years of destruction and armed battles between rival factions, but a BBC correspondent says such a twin attack is rare.
