Officials say a wildfire in Northern California has now claimed at least 29 lives, equaling the deadliest such disaster in the history of the state. Some four thousand firefighters are battling the flames. More than two hundred people are still missing after the blaze swept through the town of Paradise, destroying thousands of homes. The mayor of Paradise, Jody Jones, gave the BBC an update of the situation in that town.

Most of the residential is gone, I would say ninety percent. I had an opportunity to go up there and take a look for myself. Just about everyone I know lost their home. But I would say fifty percent of the business district is gone.
And Israeli army officer, the Hamas military commander and others have been killed during an Israeli special forces operation inside the Gaza Strip.
Health officials in Gaza said six Palestinians have been killed, including the militant commander. Sirens warning of rocket fire from Gaza have been sounding in nearby Israeli towns with several rockets shot down by anti-missile batteries. The exposure of such a reported operation by Israeli forces inside Gaza would be extremely rare and comes after apparent progress in an Egyptian-and UN-brokered process to mediate after a series of escalations between the two sides in recent months.

Over the weekend, Turkey revealed it had shared audio tapes relating to the case with allies including Britain. And today, Jeremy Hunt will fly to Riyadh to meet King Salman and his son, the country's de facto ruler, Mohammed bin Salman. The Foreign Secretary will urge them to do more to deliver justice and accountability to the Khashoggi family. He'll say it is unacceptable the circumstances surrounding the murder still remain unclear.
