A powerful hurricane is continuing to cause major destruction in the north of the Bahamas, a day after it first made landfall with houses underwater, cars overturned and power lines down. Hurricane Dorian has left many people in the Abaco islands homeless and the storm is now moving slowly westward across grand Bahamas. Officials have told residents to remain in shelters. Forecasters have warned of a life-threatening storm surge of up to seven meters. Bahamian Prime Minister Hubert Minnis had this message for his country's residence.
This is a deadly storm and a monster storm. I can only say to them that I hope this is not the last time they will hear my voice. And may God be with them.
One of the leaders of an impending parliamentary rebellion against no-deal Brexit says the B ritish government wants to lose the vote so it can purge the governing Conservative Party. The former Justice Secretary David Gauke told the BBC that the government's apparent strategy was to sack rebel MPs and exclude them as candidates in the resulting general election. Opposition politicians are expected to attempt to block a no-deal Brexit when parliament reconvenes tomorrow, but they will not reveal details. But the former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair has urged Labour MPs to vote against holding a general election if the government seeks one, comparing the prospect to an elephant trap.
It's counter-intuitive for opposition parties to refuse an election. But in this exceptional case, it's vital they do so. The Brexiteers are laying a trap to seem as if pushed into an election whilst actively preparing for one. Boris Johnson knows that if no-deal Brexit stands on its own as a proposition, it might well fail, but if he mixes it up with the Brexit question and the Corbyn question together in a general election, he could succeed.
Prosecutors in the Czech Republic have halted an investigation into alleged fraud by the Prime Minister Andrej Babis. The state attorney's office said he had changed his mind about the case. Mr. Babis' ANO Party won the election in 2017, but other parties have been reluctant to join him in a coalition government while the case was hanging over his head. Rob Cameron reports.Mr. Babis and several family members have been formally charged by police with misappropriating two million euros in EU small business funds for his huge Agrofert conglomerate before he entered politics, allegations the Czech prime minister resolutely denies. But it's not the end of this four-year saga, one that has dogs the billionaire businessman's political career. The local prosecutor's superiors will now examine the decision and a spokesman for the supreme state prosecutor's office said it could become involved.
