A top US diplomat has said he was following President Trump's orders to put pressure on Ukraine to open politically motivated investigations. Gordon Sondland told the impeachment inquiry that he believed the military aid to Ukraine was withheld to try to force its government to launch the probes. The Democrats chairing the impeachment hearings Adam Schiff said Mr.Sondland's testimony made it clear that awareness of the scheme included other senior officials, including the US secretary of state Mike Pompeo.
