Israel's government has approved a $300 million plan to consolidate its control of the Golan Heights, which is regarded by most of the world as occupied territory.

From Israeli's perspective, it's useful strategically in terms of keeping a watch on Syria, but even more so in terms of preventing Syria, and the groups that in the last 10 years of the war have gathered groups allied to Hezbollah, to Iran, which Israel paints as a very serious threat.
