Punished by plummeting sales of personal computers, Dell presented investors on Thursday with its lowest fourth-quarter profit since 2002.

Dell, based in Round Rock, Texas, reported net income of $351 million, or 18 cents a share, down 48 percent from the $679 million, or 31 cents a share, reported in the same period last year.

Excluding one-time expenses, Dell said it earned 29 cents a share, beating the 26 cents a share that Wall Street analysts had expected on that basis, according to Thomson Reuters.

Dell's revenue in the quarter, which ended Jan. 30, tumbled to $13.4 billion — a 16 percent drop from the $16 billion reported last year and also its lowest total since 2005.

Analysts had predicted Dell would report sales of $14.2 billion. "Within our business, we're being very disciplined in managing costs, generating profitability and cash flow, and investing in ways that separate Dell from others today and when the economy inevitably improves," said Michael Dell, the company's founder and chief executive, in a statement.

During the recession, executives at Dell have promoted a strategy of trying to keep profits high at the expense of missing some sales.

Dell has also continued with an aggressive cost-cutting program that began when Dell returned as chief executive in 2007 to help revive the company he founded. The company said Thursday that it would seek to shave an additional $1 billion a year from the company's costs by 2011.
